Dates are based on Medicare's standard enrollment rules and are for planning only. If you already receive Social Security benefits, you'll usually be enrolled in Parts A and B automatically. Confirm your dates with Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.

Your Initial Enrollment Period

Most people first sign up for Medicare during a 7-month window around their 65th birthday: the three months before the month you turn 65, that month, and the three months after.

Signing up in the first three months means Part A and Part B start the first day of your birthday month. If you wait until your birthday month or later, coverage starts the first day of the month after you sign up.

Why the timing matters

Missing your window without other qualifying coverage can mean a gap in coverage and a Part B late enrollment penalty that lasts as long as you have Part B.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is also time-limited. During those six months, you can buy any Supplement plan sold in your state, and insurers can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health. We help clients plan all of these dates at no cost.
